Our History
The Cattle Market
In the early 1900s, Crediton was a quaint and modest town with the label of being the "market town," of Devon. The cattle markets in Crediton were the foundation on what is now commonly referred to as the "square," as well as life in Crediton. The Crediton Cattle Market would attract 100s of people from across Devon. The historic Red Brick Houses encompass the modern day square as a reminder of our past. Our red brick building was theorised to be erected in the 1700s, with attached stables to the rear. The building has stood next to the Market for years until the demolition of the market happened soon after
1970s-80s
The Old Market House
Our predecessor was the well known "Old Market House." This pub, which was listed in 1972, was a large part of Crediton's culture in the 70s and 80s acting as a predominantly drinking pub. The pub was opposite the old important Market Street Firehouse and saw common travelling visitors stop by.
The eventual selling of the property to us came with a large meaningful shift in the dynamic of service from a drinking atmosphere to a balanced mixture of food and drink
Now
The Town Square
The most recent change to the area was the construction of the Town Square. This Town Square replaced the Firehouse and gave Crediton its needed community hub. Along with us, other businesses are situated surrounding the square making it a picturesque location that has benefitted us significantly. The Town Square features Open Air Theatres, Food Festivals, Music Events and Holiday celebrations. The large seating capacity on the Square makes it a fantastic summer location to sit in the sun and grab a drink and bite with us.
